Right now, it’s hard to deny that Matt Cardona is one of the best wrestlers in the world. Since being fired from WWE, and failing to capture a contract in AEW – Cardona has taken steps to truly reinvent himself. His time in GCW has let him build up a great heel character, one that he’s brought into Impact Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance. Now, he’s claimed the biggest win of his career – as Matt Cardona has now won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
Matt Cardona Has Become The NWA World Heavyweight Champion
This came after his match with current champion Trevor Murdoch at NWA Powerrr Trip earlier tonight. Cardona has only wrestled one match in the NWA before this match, where he teamed with Mike Knox to win a three way tag team match. Murdoch managed a 169 day reign following his victory over Nick Aldis at NWA 73 – Wrestling at The Chase.
Four defences came after this reign, two coming against Mike Knox – with the other two coming against Gangrel & Attila Khan. The reign as a whole was a low spot for the belt, with it failing to capture viewers. However, now with Cardona as champion – this belt will get it’s biggest spotlight since the belt was held by Cody Rhodes.
Time For Cardona To Be A Travelling Champion
Right now, Matt Cardona is one of the hardest working men in professional wrestling. He’s constantly pushing angles on Twitter, and working as many shows as possible. We will likely see the belt defended in NWA, GCW and Impact Wrestling during the reign of Cardona, with those being the big three promotions that Cardona works for.
Historically, the NWA World Heavyweight Champion has been a travelling champion. The likes of Ric Flair & Dusty Rhodes travelled the world as NWA Champion, defending against anyone possible. We previously saw Nick Aldis try to do this, but a lack of interest in Aldis as a performer really prevented this from getting any attention.
This is the best move that NWA has made since Billy Corgan took over, as they finally have their top belt on a wrestler who is red hot. Do you think this reign will boost Matt Cardona to the next level in professional wrestling? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
