Nicki Minaj And TikTok Meet With Influencers And Creators
On Wednesday, February 8, the multiple award-winning singer and also TikTok had invited influencers and creators from the app to a chat that was held on zoom. This was part of a celebration of Black History Month by TikTok. TikTok has expressed earlier in the month how Black History would be celebrated in various ways.
Nicki Minaj Addresses Criticism About Black History Month Event
“Our celebration of #BlackTikTok will include… TikTok LIVE programming that spotlights Black Creators making waves on and off the platform.” This is seen on TikTok website as part of their plans to support and also advocate Black History.
The meeting that was held on Zoom looked like a great innovation; but Black TikTok users think otherwise. They had taken to social media after the event to lament about how the event had more non-Black than even the Black whose celebration it was.
During an Instagram Live, Nicki addressed the issue. She said, “I had a really great call, a really great zoom, with TikTok today. Shoutout to everybody that was on there.” She then proceeded to speak on their complaints; “I hear you guys. I heard what y’all were saying and let me see if I can schedule something else for you guys. Trust me, I heard y’all loud and clear.”
One of the TikTok Creators who spoke out against the event that held—Niccoya made videos to also address the issue. She made a tweet that said “I don’t know why I’m surprised non-black creators felt entitled to steal a spot into the TikTok black history month. It’s almost as if they steal our dances, trends, and content.
Why would they stop at our invites?” Also, another creator—Dessy Joseph, when speaking about the event in a video explained that there was a zoom link that was sent out but a lot of Black creators didn’t get it in time, and when they did, the 300 capacity had been met.
