Australian PM Scott Morrison has declared that Kanye West wouldn’t be allowed to perform in Australia if he wasn’t fully vaccinated. The news comes after it was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald that Kanye West was looking to perform in Australia next month.
Prime Minister Says That Kanye West Would Need to Vaccinated Before Potential March Tour of Australia
Prior to this, tennis superstar, Novak Djokovic’s visa was rejected because of Australia’s COVID-19 rules and the athlete being unvaccinated. This caused him to miss the Australian Open after winning the tournament for three years running. In a press conference, Morrison stressed the country’s COVID rules—especially the “fully vaccinated” part. He further expressed that the rules were for everyone.
“They apply to everybody, as people have seen most recently. It doesn’t matter who you are, they are the rules. Follow the rules—you can come. You don’t follow the rules, you can’t.”
While the Australian tour wasn’t officially announced not, Morrison’s statement towards a potential Kanye West touring the country comes from curbing the thoughts of unvaccinated visitors believing they can just enter Australia. This means it’s hard to work around given that Australia is known to be particularly strict with its COVID rules to the point that visitors can’t claim they weren’t aware.
In West’s case, since speculation of a March tour already got out, it would also be hard to say that the tour was scheduled at the last minute. A tour takes time to organize from promotion to getting venues, so there is ample time to be vaccinated before arriving in the nation.
Also, arriving in Australia with scheduled shows already sold out but being unable to enter just sounds like a nightmare for any performer—one many performers would be wise to avoid. West has differing public statements about vaccination.
Last year, Kanye said he’d gotten a vaccination shot in 2021. However, in 2020 he was apprehensive about getting the vaccine saying that it was “the mark of the beast”. The Prime Minister’s words come just as Australia is dealing with an uptick in COVID-19 cases. On Saturday alone, 97 people died of COVID—after 98 died that Friday.
It has been reported by health officials that admission numbers had either leveled or were declining depending on the state.
