UFC welterweight contender Sean Strickland may have earned himself a decision win at UFC Vegas 47, but he wasn’t pleased with himself. At the post-fight press conference, Strickland blamed himself and his own acquiescence to “fancy f*ckers wearing suits” for this supposedly poor performance. Specifically, he was thinking about a potential title shot.
““I let the pressure get the better of me. I knew I was better than him. You guys knew I was better than him. He was a guy that I maybe did not finish, but he should have been more bloody and messed up after the fight, but he wasn’t.
Strickland Blasts His Own Performance, Says He Succumbed to “fancy f*ckers wearing suits”
That’s because I took my foot off the gas. I just coasted through that fight. I don’t think I was even really trying that hard. It kind of sucks but it is what it is. That’s what you get for being a p*ssy. No bonus for me.
I get a lot of fancy f*ckers wearing suits and they come up to me and they start talking about title fights and things of that nature. You hear that all the time and you start thinking ‘do I really want to risk getting knocked out when I could go for a title fight? So I let the fancy folks in the suits throw me off a little bit but it won’t happen again.”
Strickland was ranked #7 before the fight, and emerged victorious over his opponent, Jack Hermansson, at the #6 ranked welterweight. It’s expected that Strickland will take Hermansson’s place in the welterweight pecking order, but whether that translates to a shot at welterweight champ Kamaru Usman is another story.
Another factor, says Strickland, is his pay structure, which doubles his fight fee if he can earn a victory. “They start talking about bonuses and wins and half my pay.
I want a title shot. I don’t want to go in there and potentially get knocked out and be like ‘well hey Sean, you’re a f*cking nobody.’
I’m going to see you guys in the hall and you’re going to act like you don’t f*cking know me anymore until the next time I fight. I don’t want that. I want to be your f*cking friend, you guys. You guys only like me if I win!”
Is Sean Strickland sees UFC gold in his future, he’ll have to wait. Leon “Rocky” Edwards is widely expected to be the next challenger for Usman’s crown, while Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington will duke it out to see which of them gets an Usman trilogy fight first.
