Kane is a significant part of The Undertaker’s lore in that we actually got the origin of The Deadman after him being in the WWE for seven years at that point. While Taker has generally had storylines and angles worth following, his brother in destruction hasn’t been so lucky.
It’s not that Kane hasn’t had a good number of entertaining feuds, matches, and overall creative direction but at his core, Kane was purely meant to be another brawling foe for The Undertaker at a time when he needed more to add to his overall lore and character.
However, once WWE had nothing for Kane that did the same for him, he just seemed out of place at the minimum and it was garbage at the worst. That scale isn’t the same for Taker as it could just be boring or pretty bad at the worst.
Kane Feuds with X-Pac
Let’s look at a big L that WWE delivered to the Big Red Machine as Kane loses his girl to former tag partner X-Pac. From late-1999 until January 2000, Kane and Tori were involved in an on-screen. Kane and X-Pac had become a tag team prior to this and the Big Red Machine was kind of a DX associate at the time.
The odd but somewhat familiar—in that it was a big bruiser and smaller, athletic talent—proved to be a successful team and they claimed Tag Team gold twice. As with most cobbled together teams, eventually, Kane and X-Pac broke up and began feuding.
X-Pac Wins Tori
Tori—the de facto valet of the team—sided with Kane and also feuded with DX. All of this cumulated into a match on the December 20 episode of RAW that if the Big Red Machine failed to defeat champion Big Show for the WWE Championship, Tori would spend Christmas with X-Pac.
Notice that the incentive for Big Show to even entertain this whole thing is missing. If anything, it should’ve been if Kane loses Big Show gets Tori. However, Show had his own thing going on at the time and you don’t have to woo, feed, or take the WWE Championship belt out on dates.
X-Pac and Tori’s Christmas Story
Anyway, as expected Kane loses the match and X-Pac takes Tori. On the following RAW, Tori tells Kane that nothing happened and that the brash young punk was actually respectful.
In the following weeks, there would be a change in Tori where she basically treated the Big Red Monster as a Pokemon, lying to get him to attack superstars who just so happened to be feuding with DX members.
It wouldn’t be until a late January episode of RAW that Kane—lured into a trap by Tori—found out that Tori and X-Pac actually had sex over the Christmas weekend! Not only that but he’d been used as probably the biggest pawn in the history of pawns.
She continued to play a major role in the Kane vs. X-Pac feud, helping Pac get wins over Big Red. Kane would finally get a significant W at WrestleMania 2000 as he teamed up with Rikishi to take on X-Pac and Road Dogg. Afterward, Tori would meet her fate between the cheeks of a Rikishi Stinkface.
So, while X-Pac did finally get his comeuppance, Kane had to go through all of this unnecessary drama and manipulation to get there. Sure, the former Isaac Yankem DDS got the W in the end but the whole ordeal was an L.
