Tonight is the end of another era in WWE, with it bringing the end of 205 Live. First started back in 2016 following the Cruiserweight Classic, 205 Live was made to put the spotlight on the division. Few expected it to last for even a few years – but tonight this show will end it’s run after six years.
Goodbye, 205 Live
For the past while, WWE would tape 205 Live ahead of NXT – making the ‘Live’ part of the name meaningless. This was simply more practical, as WWE merged the Cruiserweight division into the NXT roster, and putting the show after Smackdown Live simply required extra travel that was easily cut out.
Over the past few months, the ‘205’ part of the name would also lose all meaning, as the weight limit was thrown out – as the show was simply used to give anyone from NXT some extra ring time. This all added to 205 Live needing a rebrand, and that is what is coming now.
WWE NXT – Level Up Takes Its Place
Recently, WWE applied for a trademark with “NXT – Level Up”, which will have it’s first episode taped tonight instead. It will air in the same time slot – and likely have the same format, talent showcased, and announce time. All that is changing is the name that WWE puts on this show.
The 205 Live that started in 2016 died months ago, with this coming the moment WWE moved away from having the show focused on the Cruiserweights. This is simply the final nail in the coffin – as WWE moves to a new show with the same purpose. WWE might go for a few big matches to boost viewership for the first few episodes – but things will return to stakeless matches fairly quickly.
The history of 205 Live is one that has many ups and downs, featuring some stretches where the show was hard to watch – but also having some of the best matches in recent WWE history, especially when they involved the likes of Mustafa Ali or Buddy Murphy.
