Right now, Ring of Honor is in the middle of a transition period. They shut down around the end of 2021, with plans to restart in April 2022. This has been proven true, but with the added change of the company being purchased by Tony Khan – the man behind All Elite Wrestling. Fans are now hopeful for some crossover between the brands following Supercard of Honor on April 1st – but don’t expect to see The Briscoes on AEW TV anytime soon.
WarnerMedia Doesn’t Want The Briscoes On AEW TV
Being one of the first to be announced for the new Ring of Honor hall of fame, The Briscoes are legends in the company. They’ve been around since day one, and are the current ROH World Tag Team Champions, beating The OGK for the belts at Final Battle 2021. However, even with an angle with AEW tag team FTR set up that night, nothing has come of it on AEW TV.
We now possibly have the reason for that. It comes from WarnerMedia, owners of both TNT & TBS – the networks which air AEW’s televised programs, Dynamite & Rampage – not wanting The Briscoes represented on TV. This all goes back to homophobic tweets made by Jay Briscoe nearly a decade ago.
While Briscoe has been noted to have changed since then, with the likes of Effy backing him up by saying he’s a true locker room leader – it doesn’t change that he has baggage that no major company wants to deal with right now. Human beings can accept apologies, but companies can’t take risks like this.
Tony Khan Likely Doesn’t Want To Take The Risk
RIght now, AEW have done a lot of work to build up a certain reputation of trust with their fans. That type of trust isn’t common in professional wrestling, which makes it important to maintain.
Tony Khan was likely the one to let WarnerMedia know about the tweets from Jay Briscoe in the first place, not wanting to blindside his business partners with the backlash that would come if they appeared on TV.
There’s a chance that The Briscoes still find work through Ring of Honor, as well as promotions like GCW – but unless something changes, AEW is not a place that will welcome them.
Do you think AEW will ever take a chance on The Briscoes? Does the potential reward outweigh the risks? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
