Despite his knockout win, it wasn’t a great night at the office for Jake Paul. His rematch against Tyron Woodley reportedly failed to deliver the kind of pay-per-views the YouTuber-turned-boxer is accustomed to for his novelty boxing matches.
Journalist Stephen Mulhausen broke the news via Twitter: “Sources: Have learned that Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley 2 “bombed” on cable/satellite PPV. Numbers are below November’s #AEW Full Gear which did under 65,000 buys on terrestrial TV. Streaming numbers are unknown.”
Paul Vs Woodley 2 PPV Numbers “Bombed”, Paul, Masvidal Respond
By comparison, Paul’s fight against Ben Askren sold 1.5 million pay-per-views. It’s a long way down from over a million to under a hundred thousand, but as Mulhausen acknowledged, streaming numbers have yet to come in. With Paul’s overwhelmingly young fanbase, who prefer streaming to traditional cable TV, his streaming numbers may yet save the fight’s pay-per-view sales.
Jake Paul quickly retaliated on Twitter, calling “bullsh*t” on the numbers: “The PPV number rumors are bullsh*t 1st fight w Woodley we sold 500k+
Numbers for this one are still rolling in but still looking positive. Not my best business night But remember.. Everyone wanted to see me Vs. Fury and that’s what we sold..”
Paul also thanked Showtime “for riding with me and all the fighters on the card and Tyron for not being a bitch like most of these “fighters” are..”
It’s widely expected that the total sales for the rematch will be far lower than the first fight when all the numbers come in.
Of course, Jake Paul’s loudest rival, Jorge Masvidal, was equally quick with his Twitter response. He doubled down on his earlier position that Paul simply cannot afford to pay him to cross over into boxing, regardless of their heated personal rivalry.
“Bitch boy can’t afford the big boys Never again do I want to hear my name associated with the fake. 3 0 5 day is coming”
Masvidal predicted the disappointing sales not long ago. Responding to an in-ring callout from Jake Paul, he posted a video in which he accused Paul of giving away tickets and failing to make anything close to the money he was offering his opponents.
“You are giving out free tickets, you got street teams giving out free tickets. You can’t afford me to come over there. Let me tell you a little secret you don’t know, I fight for money or I fight the best in the world. You’re neither. You understand? I know it hurts. You’re neither the best in the world or making money.”
