Undefeated UFC welterweight Sean Brady wasn’t overly pleased with his decision win over Michael Chiesa at UFC Vegas 43. Brady said that thanks to a fragile nose, he was “sucking blood” every time he tried to inhale, which is why the famously finish-happy Brady went the distance.
“I was just sucking blood the entire fight. I wanted to do more and show more, because I’ve been off for a while, I had two cancelled fights and an injury. I just wanted to show more of who I am.
Sean Brady Was “Sucking Blood The Entire Fight” Against Chiesa
I looked at his back, and there was so much blood on his back. Man, it was pretty bad. It was dripping into my throat. So I’m trying to breathe, and while I’m breathing, I’m sucking in blood.” In the moment, Brady revealed, he was forced to “improvise” against Michael Chiesa, a formidable grappler.
Brady, over the course of his career, said that he’d broken his nose “several times”. The repeated trauma to his beak created the sensitivity that led to the deluge of blood in the Chiesa fight. It was more than a minor irritation, said Brady. When Chiesa landed a clean shot to Brady’s nose early in the fight, it was like someone turned on a faucet.
It wasn’t enough, however, to stop Chiesa and Brady for exchanging pleasantries in between vicious blows mid-fight. Brady revealed their mid-fight conversation at the post-fight press conference.
““He was like, ‘Man, you’re f*cking strong – you’re really strong. Paul wasn’t lying.’ I said, ‘Thanks bro.’ I’m trying to win this fight here.’”
After a decisive – if bloody – win over the #9 ranked welterweight, Brady knows he’ll be taking on an even tougher opponent next.
“I was even surprised when I got him. Guys, I was [ranked No. 14], I was trying to fight anyone, literally, in the top-15. Anyone that was next to me, and I was having a hard time getting something, and then they offered me him. I was just grateful for it.
Now, the other guys really aren’t going to be able to say no.” Before that, however, Brady needs to get his nose fixed. He won’t be taking on the likes of Belal Muhammad or Khamzat Chimaev without addressing his bendy beak.
“It’s something I’ve got to get taken care of now so it’s not a problem in the future.” What do you think is next for Sean Brady? Let us know in the comments.
