Jake Paul took a big financial hit when his Tyron Woodley rematch did not succeed as planned. Even though Paul delivered a stunning knockout win over Woodley, finishing an otherwise lethargic fight, Chael Sonnen believes the fight failed to live up to Paul’s lofty pay-per-view expectations. Accordingly, he needs an opponent with a big mouth and a big name.
So he should call Nate Diaz. “Jake told us his last fight didn’t meet expectations, that’s fine. I put on live events all the time, you have to be used to that. You will do everything the same, you’ll sell out, 5,000 people.
Chael Sonnen: Why Jake Paul Needs Nate Diaz
You will take that same recipe to a different date, for reasons you don’t understand, there will be 500 people. What do you do? Well, I can tell you what did happen, they didn’t use him again.
Jake Paul came out and said that he was putting his boxing career on hold. I think it had to do with, like, promoting or helping train a female teammate of his. He was smart enough to get in front of it. Was that the reality? Did he not want to fight? Or did he know that a fight wasn’t coming?
I can only tell you that as I surmise with the evidence I have in front of me, Jake Paul can really use Nate Diaz right now. Having one bad night isn’t enough to go into an absolute panic. But having one bad night is a problem.”
Nate Diaz is nearing the end of his UFC contract, and is actively trying to move on from the organization that made him a star. Diaz, although primarily a grappler, has enough power in his hands to deliver some brutal boxing, with five knockout wins in his career. Diaz has fought only three times since losing to Conor McGregor in 2016, with only one win in three. His last two fights ended in decision losses, and it’s likely that Nate Diaz will retire from competition in the near future.
Although Dana White will likely be trying to book Diaz vs McGregor 3 as a final big-money fight for one of the UFC’s most beloved veterans, Diaz himself may well have other plans. A big earner against Jake Paul could well be on the cards. Paul seems committed to fighting retired UFC personalities, particularly wrestlers who are twenty pounds lighter than him.
Nate Diaz certainly fits that profile. Do you want to see Diaz vs Paul? Let us know in the comments.
