Following a lacklustre build to their biggest show of the year, WWE would end up overdelivering with the two night extravaganza that was WrestleMania 38. From the return of Cody Rhodes, to a surprising performance from Logan Paul – to the in-ring return of Stone Cold Steve Austin, there was a lot to enjoy. Kevin Owens was the man who got to work with Stone Cold – and feels his career has now peaked.
It’s All Downhill From Here
While appearing on After The Bell with Corey Graves, Owens would reflect on this WrestleMania main event. Owens had the following to say.
“It’s all downhill from here, really. It’s still unbelievable. Sometimes, I’ll have my moments where I’m not doing anything, I’m just sitting around, and I’ll pull it up on my phone and I’ll specifically watch the moment where the ref rings the bell. I still can’t believe it happened. It’s really hard to process what happened and hard to put into words.
It’s the moment where I say, ‘I’m looking for a fight.’ That’s when he turns and gives me that glare. When I say, ‘I’m looking for a fight,’ You see people behind him standing up and you hear the buzz. Moments like that are special. Another thing I remember really well — this might have been caught by a WWE 24 documentary crew — at one point, right before we went out, I caught a glimpse of him just pacing back and forth. He looked like a caged lion ready to murder me. I was like, ‘Oh man, this is going to be wild.’ It’s all very surreal and hard to put into words,”
Originally this was booked as a main event edition of the Kevin Owens show – which was a well laid trap to get Stone Cold infront of a Texas crowd, and call him out for a No Holds Barred Match. Stone Cold would give as good as he got from Owens, and won with a Stone Cold Stunner.
Kevin Owens Was Supposed To Main Event WrestleMania Against Chris Jericho In 2017
This was also Kevin Owens finally getting the WrestleMania main event that he was promised back in 2017. His feud with Chris Jericho was supposed to see them meet in the main event over the WWE Universal Championship, only for Goldberg to beat Owens for the belt just ahead of the event.
They would instead meet around the start of the show, a choice that also made Jericho reconsider his place in WWE – leading to him helping start up AEW. Jericho will likely find his way back to WWE in time, and previously was in the main event of WrestleMania when he faced Triple H back in 2002.
