YouTuber Logan Paul and UFC lightweight Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett are entertaining the notion of fighting one another in the Octagon. Although such a fight seems like yet more trash talk from the Paul camp, UFC analyst Chael Sonnen is sold on the prospect. Sonnen told his YouTube channel that the matchup is much fairer than it looks on paper.
“I like it. I’m into it, this is no longer a discussion if Logan can go with Paddy. He’s much bigger, when he calls out Paddy he’s saying ‘make me some concessions’. Make the threat of unarmed combat a little bit smaller.
Sonnen Gives Pimblett vs Paul his Seal of Approval
Somebody with a lack of experience like [Logan], but a real willingness, he can take this audience anywhere he wants but will bring it to [the UFC]. He’s willing to put that up, he’s willing to put it on the line.”
I think it’s fair, I also think it’s very reasonable. What is he going to do, call out Jon Jones?
Come on, come on. There’s something about it that has a certain flavor, it passes the smell test. I’m into the Paul brothers. I’m probably the last one you thought would say that. But, I’m into them, and I have no problem with Logan calling out Paddy.”
Logan Paul’s last outing in the combat sports world came against Floyd Mayweather, over whom Paul boasted a fifty-pound weight advantage. Both Paul brothers, despite their protestations otherwise, have built their fledgling combat sports careers around fighting retirees and opponents much smaller than they are. Logan’s brother Jake’s undefeated record as a pro boxer includes two UFC welterweights better known for wrestling than right hooks.
Chael Sonnen’s argument is that Logan’s combat inexperience is outweighed by his size advantage. Paddy Pimblett fights at 155 pounds, often dropping huge amounts of weight to reach the UFC lightweight limit. Pimblett himself has promised that, should the pair fight, he would aim to submit Paul, using his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to overcome his larger, stronger opponent.
While it remains unlikely that the two would ever actually face one another in the Octagon, far stranger things have happened in the combat sports world. Nobody is better positioned to bring bizarre fights to life than the Paul brothers, for better or worse.
Do you agree with Chael Sonnen? Does this fight make sense? Let us know in the comments.
