Red Velvet was prepared to face former AEW Women’s World Champion Hikaru Shida in the first round of the Owen Hart Memorial Cup, but a sudden change to facing Kris Statlander suits her just fine. ONce, Statlander & Velvet were thick as thieves, but Velvet is now aligned with Jade Cargill – and is ready to show just how far she’s come. The winner of this match will face Ruby Soho in the semi-finals, potentially as soon as next week’s episode of AEW Dynamite.
Before this match, The Young Bucks would call out Matt & Jeff Hardy for a match at Double or Nothing. They called it a modern tag team dream match, but it has happened numerous times before the final WWE run of The Hardy Boyz. Even still, this is a big match and one that could drive PPV sales.
Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly would also say they intend to steal the show at Double or Nothing in the final match of the mens Owen Hart Memorial Cup. Cole beat Jeff Hardy to get his spot in the finals – and O’Reilly will face Samoa Joe to qualify on Wednesday.
Kris Statlander Flaunts Power While Red Velvet Shows Her Evil Side
To start this match, Statlander flaunted her power edge by holding Velvet up in a military press slam. Just one arm was all it took to hold Velvet up before slamming her down. Velvet was tossed to the floor after blocking a headscissor, before she’d catch Statlander in the ring apron.
Statlander was able to hit a big suplex onto the apron, but back into the ring – Velvet attacked the previously injured knee with some fast dragon screw leg whips. Velvet distracted the referee as Kiera Hogan attacked Statlander in the corner, before the leg of Statlander was bent around the ring post.
Some hip drops to the leg would not keep Statlander down, who nailed a massive knee strike in the corner. Velvet shot back with The Final Slice, which Statlander was able to survive. Blue Thunder Bomb would get Statlander a neat fall, before Velvet hit the backstabber.
Statlander would go for Big Bang Theory, and while Velvet blocked into a pinfall – Statlander countered for the win. The Baddies tried to beat Statlander down, but Ruby Soho & Anna Jay made the save.
