Everyone wants the Spice Girls to make a comeback…even Prince William! Melanie Brown, better known as ‘Mel B’ or ‘Scary Spice’ was recently presented with an esteemed award by Prince William at Buckingham Palace. During the ceremony, Mel claims that the Duke of Cambridge inquired about getting the Spice Girls back together.
Mel, who was dubbed ‘Scary Spice’ during her time in the Spice Girls, was the recipient of an MBE, or Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for ‘services to charitable causes and vulnerable women’. After greeting the royal with a proper curtsey, Mel and William had some cheeky banter about forming a revival of the iconic 90’s girl-band.
Mel B Says That Prince William Is Pushing For a Spice Girls Reunion
“William told me, ‘I’m so delighted that it’s me giving you this,” said Mel. “And he asked, ‘Will you get the Spice Girls back together?”
The singer informed William that she was set to have dinner with Victoria ‘Posh Spice’ Beckham later that evening and that maybe she could convince her to honor his request as they dined. William replied with “Oh good, I’ll work on David then,” as a reference to Victoria’s husband, former professional footballer David Beckham.
The Beckhams have a longstanding relationship with the Royal family and attended Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011 as well as Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.
At the ceremony Mel donned a stylish red dress designed by none other than Victoria Beckham herself. Victoria reportedly flew back to England from Miami to style Mel for the big event.
Mel B has hinted at the possibility of a Spice Girls reunion many times over the years, and even suggested the prospect of a reunion tour in 2023.
“I’m always pushing to have a Spice Girls reunion,” Mel said. “And we were kind of in talks last year, but then COVID hit, so that kind of pushed everyone’s plans, like AWOL. But I think we’re hopefully on the same page together — they’re gonna kill me for saying this — but we’re hoping, especially me, if it’s got anything to do with me, which it will have, because I’m the driving force, and I’ll make sure it happens”.
The Spice Girls have seemingly had a profound impact on the royal family and they have maintained a cordial relationship over the years. Prince William even attended the 1997 premiere of the ‘Spice World’ movie along with Prince Charles and Prince Harry. That same year, a young Harry and Duke of Edinburgh were spotted at a Spice Girls concert in South Africa.
