Last year, YOH had a horrible start to his Best of the Super Juniors tournament, dropping his first four matches. He’d still manage to make the finals – going toe to toe with Hiromu Takahashi in an incredible performance. Now, he looks to start this years tournament off with a bang, as he takes on the current IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion – Taiji Ishimori.
Ishimori is fresh in his third reign as champion, and looks to prove he’s the ace of the division once again. YOH has been showing a lack of fire outside of big matches, and more just looks like he’s happy to be here. What YOH will we see in tonight’s main event clash? There’s only one way to find out.
Taiji Ishimori Goes After The Arm Of YOH
Ishimori started this match with a wrist lock, before YOH would try and counter. He’d fail to take control and had his arm wrenched, before Ishimori hit the ropes for some speed. YOH was able to trip Ishimori up, before being dumped to the outside. Ishimori would take control, before using the ring post to attack the arm of YOH.
Bell hammer was used as a distraction, before Ishmori broke a chair over the arm of YOH. Both the Bone Lock & Yes! Lock do serious damage to the arm, and Ishimori might have already secured victory by focusing on that arm early. In the ring, Ishimori continued to focus on the arm of YOH – before hitting double knees in the corner.
YOH shot back with a single leg dropkick, before hitting some elbow smashes. Ishimori would be dropped with a running forearm, before YOH would nailed the dive to the floor. Back in the ring, YOH nailed a dropkick from the top rope, but only got a two count. Ishimori would expose a steel corner of the ring – and drove YOH shoulder first before nailing a shoulder breaker.
Bone Lock Applied Means You Must Tap Out
La Mistica was countered, but YOH couldn’t get the Five Star Clutch. Ishimori would take two Dragon Screws, before YOH would look to apply the Out of Print. YOH would be kicked off, but he’d focus on the leg before a Falcon Arrow that moved right into a knee bar. Ishimori would show a lot of pain, but ultimately YOH let him go.
YOH would maintain his grip on Ishimori to nail two German Suplexes – but couldn’t get the bridging Dragon Suplex. Ishimori would hit Bloody Cross, sacrificing his knee to stop the rush of YOH. Some forearm smashes from YOH would land, before a headbutt. Drop The Needle would land, before YOH followed up with an attempt at Direct Drive.
Ishimori would counter by tossing YOH into the corner post, but was able to counter out of Bloody Cross. La Mistica would lead into Bone Lock, and YOH was forced to tap out. Ishimori gets two points, and YOH starts this tournament just like 2021.
