Charles Oliveira did win the bout last night but was unable to gain a title for it. However, he did gain something. He gains tremendous respect from all UFC fans and he gains a valued epithet, The Best Lightweight UFC fighter. One more thing that he won is a leading place in the UFC statistics for a fighter with the most submission finishes in the UFC history. This win is his eleventh consecutive win.
After the bout, Charles continues his unnecessary saga of calling out Conor McGregor for a fight. The word unnecessary is not used by ‘accident’ in the previous sentence. It is truly pointless for a leading lightweight fighter to call out a UFC fighter who is not on the list of competitors at the moment. Or even better, who is not ‘worth’ skill-wise a champion’s attention.
No Brasilian Fighter Can Beat Me – Conor McGregor Says
But, one important thing is Conor’s popularity. The flamboyant Conor McGregor is to the MMA what Michael Jordan is to the NBA, what Mike Tyson is to boxing, and what Tiger Woods is for golf. When a common man, not a big follower of UFC thinks of a random MMA fighter, the first name that pops into his mind is Conor’s.
However, we must give this to Do Bronx. He has a great plan. Even though Conor McGregor doesn’t represent an issue for him fighting-wise, he represents a good match money-wise. This potential fight will bring so much attention to him, that he will double, if not triple his exposure to the broader world. If he (and he will) manages to win a bout against the most popular and highest-paid UFC fighter in the history of the promotion this will increase his income for any following fight.
Yet, the Notorious might not share the same wish as Oliviera. After the call out, he states – “I’m not sure I wish to cut the weight. I am really enjoying being built like a refrigerator. I feel I want to fight at this size just to watch it back lol. But I’d love to fight the Brazilian, 100%! I love Brazil and I’m unbeaten against Brazil. All KO’s. I’ve some thinking to do.”
It is funny how from a great fighter and a beast in the octagon you can switch to being an underdog and a clown of the promotion. And all this because the money and fame stroke you like a lightning. Even funnier is how the sport switched. It switched from paying the best fighters the most, to paying the loudest trash talkers the most.
Finally, I think that they should organize the bout. They should put Conor McGregor in the octagon with Charles Oliveira so he can be taught a lesson. So he can cut the BS and start training and working harder to be a great fighter once again.
