I tend not to cover the Royals here on The Overtimer as I feel there are talented writers here who have more of an interest in them and could handle the news and rumors better. However, it’s hard to miss whenever you see rage and vitriol towards the couple of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Or whenever there is some sort of publicity failure on their part.
This isn’t about Harry and Meghan, it’s about this business with Meghan and her father, Thomas Markle.
Recently, the elder Markle was sent to the hospital with a stroke. He’s recovering and has been allowed to return home after five days in a hospital bed. As someone who lost a parent early last year, it’s extremely fortunate that he was able to return home to his loved ones.
However, people are missing a lot of this how Meghan’s souring toward her father fell on her father. When you have family issues, you settle them internally—even if you’re a famous family—instead of playing grab-ass with the media. When personal business gets in the media, it’s going to escalate and the public—who have a stake in the relationship—will choose sides and form perceptions of one person or the other.
Opinion: Meghan Markle Isn’t Obligated to See Her Father and Fix Things Regardless of His Health Condition
That’s regardless of who initiated the damage to the relationship in the first place. Say what you will about everything else Prince Harry and Meghan have done but on the subject of Thomas Markle, Meghan when from talking about him glowingly early on to simply going about her life as if he doesn’t exist.
She expressed that his associating with the media and some of his antics with them just wasn’t the move and he apparently didn’t listen because it’s multiple incidents.
This brings us to the whole “She should see her father” argument. If you’re on bad terms with someone and they’re the one who initially damaged the relationship and continued to do so—you’re not obligated to patch things up with them. Whether it’s a friend or family, if they ruined things, it’s on them to fix it. If they don’t the relationship simply isn’t that important enough for them to repair things.
Meghan isn’t obligated to see Thomas Markle simply because he had a stroke and legitimately had to go to the hospital for several days. Hell, he missed her wedding after allegedly faking a heart attack…and providing photos. I mean, OK they were meant to show that he was getting better but the world wasn’t concerned with his condition at the time.
It was the Harry and Meghan Wedding, not “The Thomas Markle Heart Attack Recovery with Special Guests Prince Harry and Meghan”.
Since it was so up in the air as to whether he actually suffered a heart attack and continued to cozy up to the paparazzi, his legitimacy is damaged to the point that he could’ve been in an iron lung wheezing and I’d think “Get up, Tom. There’s nothing wrong with you.”
Thomas Markle Should’ve Kept Issues Between Them, He Should Fix Things
If this were any other parent who suffered a stroke or heart attack and hadn’t become good friends with the media by putting her business out there, I’d say “Meghan should go see her pops and try to fix things.”
I say that it would be nice if she did see her recovering father—even if she just dropped in for five minutes—but she isn’t obligated to see Thomas Markle, she isn’t obligated to repair things with him, and there shouldn’t be pressured to do so. Forgiveness is up to Meghan but working towards it is on him and while it should be private, he made things public and should make things up to her in public.
That’s erasing the cause of why Meghan wants nothing to do with him at the moment while painting her as the heel and him as the babyface just because he’s elderly and had a health scare.
She’s not the one who continued to strain the relationship in the public eye and the public should at least be aware of that much by now. He’s been doing this since 2018 and now it’s “She’s so horrible for not seeing her father after his stroke.”
I’ll sum it up like this: You’ve been stabbed by a friend. Not only does this friend not apologize for stabbing you, but they also go about the neighborhood discussing the stabbing and other things about your life. You distance yourself from them and move on with your life but your friend paints you as a horrible person to anyone who listens—but they claim to want to be friends again. It’s just awful that you won’t sit and have a drink with them or acknowledge their existence.
Then the gas station clerk tells you “Hey, Chris is in the hospital with COVID something terrible, you should see him. He’s in bad health.” F**k Chris.
As always, let us know what you think in the comments. Is Meghan Markle obligated to see her father with all that has happened?
