This past weekend at AEW Double or Nothing, there was one person making their in-ring debut. Former MMA and bare knuckle fighter, and member of American Top Team – Paige VanZant. She would team with Ethan Page & Scorpio Sky, defeating the trio of Frankie Kazarian, Tay Conti, and Sammy Guevara. She was able to show some skills in her short time in the match – and feels she was meant to be a professional wrestler.
Paige VanZant Only Expects To Get Better From Here
The 28 year old would be interviewed backstage following her debut, speaking with The Schmo – and saying the following about her performance at the event.
“I went out there, we got the win, I feel like I put on an impressive performance. I showed everybody I’m meant to be a pro wrestler too.”
However, VanZant knew she wasn’t perfect in the ring, and only expects to get better as time goes on. She would say the following about her mentality that she will approach professional wrestling with.
“I never give myself a perfect grade. There’s always room for improvement. I’m only going to get better. I just started training pro wrestling but you got to see how quickly I picked up pro wrestling moves and I showed all the girls in the division they got somebody to look out for.”
AEW’s Answer To Ronda Rousey?
It’s clear that AEW is going to put a lot of trust in VanZant. Some fans have already drawn comparisons to Ronda Rousey in WWE – both being former MMA champions transitioning to professional wrestling. Rousey has been rocky at best, with many agreeing she was pushed too fast and too hard. We can hope that AEW allows VanZant to have an organic rise through the ranks, if she is ever planned to claim the AEW Women’s World or TBS Championships.
She showed potential on Sunday, and has the right approach to the industry. With a lot of backstage help to be found in AEW from the likes of William Regal & Bryan Danielson available, she could well improve at a rapid pace- and truly earn a spot on top, and not be handed it based on name value alone.
