Prince William has always held hope for a modern system, letting go of taboos that kept many back in traditional ways, just like his mother—Princess Diana did. One of these acts is Prince William standing up for openly gay soccer players.
Prince William Supports Gay Soccer Player, Jake Daniels
The Duke of Cambridge has always been a lover of sports, particularly soccer of which he is the president of England’s Football Association. The duke has worked with a number of soccer players especially as a way to promote important causes like mental health, as the duke takes advantage of the time spent with players to converse about masculinity and mental health.
First Openly Gay Soccer Player Since 1990 Receives Support From Prince William
Prince William has always been supportive towards every player, regardless of age, race or sexuality. Like in 2021 when some black players on England’s national team were victims of online racism, the duke spoke out against this.
Also, during Euro 2020 he spoke out against racist comments some English players were facing, expressing that the actions of those making racist comments were condemnable. He also added that it was “totally unacceptable” that the players would have to tolerate their racist comments. The duke’s desire for inclusiveness of everyone also came to bear with a gay player who recently came out.
Jake Daniels, a 17-year-old football player recently came out as gay, despite how rare it is to find an openly gay player in the UK. The last time a person publicly stated that he was gay was in 1990, 32 years ago. In a statement that was put out on Daniels’ team—Blackpool’s website, he said that he has been hiding the “real me” by not declaring his sexuality. “I’ve hated lying my whole life and feeling the need to change to fit in.
I want to be a role model myself by doing this,” Daniels added after stating that he was inspired by Josh Caballo, Matt Morton and Tom Daley to have the “courage and determination to drive change.” In showing support to Daniels and every other gay player, Prince William tweeted that “football should be a game for everyone,” not regarding sexuality.
