It’s hard to find a title that’s more despised by fans than the 24/7 Championship, and on June 6’s WWE Raw episode Becky Lynch demanded a match with Dana Brooke after she won the title during a 24/7 run in during Lynch and Brooke’s match.
Ignoring the predictable run in and melee that followed, when Lynch lost to Brooke thanks to Asuka, many fans took to social media to share their disappointment at Lynch chasing the 24/7 title.
Did the WWE Use the 24/7 Championship to Fire up Becky Lynch’s Fans?
While most fans were deservedly upset, there were others that pointed out this is Lynch’s fall from grace arc where she’s desperate to hold any title.
With Lynch rumored to be facing Bianca Belair at SummerSlam again, which Belair will most likely win to avenge her 17 second loss last year to complete that story, it appears a redemption story is about to unfold.
The problem with that is the 24/7 title is viewed as a punishment or degrading given its standing with fans and in the locker room as it’s a comedic title for the lower card.
The chase is demeaning
This feels like a replay of when Jeff Hardy chased after the title one week. His fans took to social media to express their outrage, and the next few weeks the WWE bent over backwards to placate them.
They had everyone on air share their undying love and respect for Jeff and what he accomplished.
In short, the WWE messed up and they knew it, and it seems like they’re trying to generate the same outrage with Becky Lynch as they did with Jeff Hardy.
The difference is, this time fans were more ready for it and called it for what it is.
That doesn’t take away the feeling wrestlers have toward it, as Matt and Jeff Hardy talked about on Talk is Jericho.
Jeff said he was crushed the day he was told he’d chase the title and it was demeaning. He couldn’t believe they were doing that to him and he was ashamed of it.
Matt also took part in the chase at one point before he was released and talked about how those people are viewed for being part of the chase.
While it looks like the WWE tried to manufacture the same outrage with Lynch, it doesn’t appear to have had the effect it did when Jeff chased after the title, but then Lynch had a match and lost it with help.
We can cite a redemption arc for Lynch all we want, but this is the perfect epitome of bad booking in the WWE. Maybe this was their attempt to lift up the 24/7 title?
