We might be on the road to Forbidden Door, but NJPW is not entirely focused on the upcoming crossover PPV with AEW. They are also pushing to make the NJPW Strong tag team division finally have a prize to claim. The Strong Tag Team Championships have been announced, with an eight team tournament to crown the champions. We now have the eight teams in the mix.
Eight Teams Enter The Mix – Only One Will Be Crowned Champion
Starting from the top left, we have the team of Christopher Daniels & Karl Fredericks taking on AEW’s The Factory – likely QT Marshall & Aaron Solow. Fredericks & Daniels are easy favorites here, with Daniels as a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion.
Bottom left of the bracket is The Mighty Don’t Kneel taking on West Coast Wrecking Crew. Many felt this was the potential finals match, but one of these top teams will be out in the first round.
Top right hand of the bracket will see Stray Dog Army take on Eddie Pearl & Ricky Gibson, otherwise known as Midnight Heat. Stray Dog Army is likely to be Bateman & Misterioso, thought Barrett Brown is also in this faction.
The bottom right hand of the bracket will see AEW’s Dark Order make their NJPW debut – expected to be Evil Uno & Preston Vance. They will be facing Aussie Open, who have been making themselves known on AEW Dynamite alongside Will Ospreay. Dark Order winning would likely be the upset here.
The Tournament Starts Tomorrow, Concludes In July
The first round matches will happen tomorrow (June 19th) during the Ignition tapings, with the semi-finals and finals coming during High Alert on July 24th. This tournament will be prone to spoilers, with NJPW Strong generally taping four one hour episodes, which air on Saturday evenings.
With Aussie Open & TMDK on separate sides of the bracket, that seems like the best possible finals match – as they’re the most well known and experienced teams in the mix. Who do you want to see as Strong Tag Team Champions? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
