Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are celebrating their daughter Lilibet’s first birthday while in Britain for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Senior royals have tweeted their birthday wishes to the tot, including one surprising message from Prince William and Kate Middleton.
“Wishing a very happy birthday to Lilibet, turning one today!,” said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from their joint Twitter account. Of course, William and Kate have been mostly estranged from Harry and Meghan ever since the pair stepped down from the royal family in 2020. While Harry and Meghan have made a rare appearance back in the UK, tensions remain high between the brothers and it remains unknown if the Cambridges have even met Lilibet as of yet.
Senior Royals Tweet Birthday Wishes for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Daughter Lilibet On Her 1st Birthday
The Queen’s Twitter account posted a message in honor of Lilibet’s milestone birthday, saying, “Wishing Lilibet a very Happy 1st Birthday!”. Also sending out birthday well-wishes were Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles , who tweeted “Wishing Lilibet a very happy 1st birthday today!” from their Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall Twitter account.
Harry and Meghan are expected to celebrate Lilibet’s first birthday privately at Windsor Castle potentially alongside Queen Elizabeth II, who has just met her great-granddaughter for the first time over the weekend. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be having a birthday event for Lilibet at Frogmore Cottage, after already having a meeting with Charles and Camilla during the Platinum Jubilee in honor of the Queen.
Harry and Meghan have seemingly kept their distance from certain members of the royal family while attending events during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, most notably William and Kate have not been spotted anywhere near the former royals. Meghan and Harry joined the royal family for a thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral but were not seen interacting with Prince William and Meghan Markle.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were also not invited to join the working royals on the Buckingham Palace balcony earlier in the week during the kickoff of the Jubilee. While there is an obvious divide within the royal family, some attest that Harry and Meghan don’t want to ruffle any feathers while they’re temporarily back in Britain.
Omid Scobie, a royal commentator, insists that Harry and Meghan’s top priority is to keep a low profile at this time. I think people are expecting some sort of big birthday extravagant event, that we’re going to see photographs from. From what I’m told, we shouldn’t expect anything. Those moments with Lilibet are very much private between them and Queen Elizabeth and of course we know how much she’s been looking forward to it,” he said.
