Right now, the women’s division in NXT 2.0 is a work in progress. We’re seeing some talents like Tiffany Stratton improve by the week, as old NXT names like Kay Lee Ray find a second chance in WWE under a new name. However, one name who has moved away from TV is one of the biggest names in the division. Io Shirai hasn’t been seen in months, and could be on her way out of WWE very soon.
Io Shirai Could Be On Her Way Out Of WWE
The reason Io Shirai has been off TV on NXT 2.0 is due to her rehabbing an injury, which could well see her run out the remainder of his contract. Her contract is due to end in August, and while a new deal has been offered – Shirai has not signed it as of the time of writing. The reported plan for Shirai is to return to Japan to be closer to her family.
Right now, there’s unfortunately not much of a future in WWE for Io Shirai. She’s done everything possible within NXT, except claim the NXT UK Women’s Championship. Shirai was the perfect name for the Takeover era of NXT, being one of the greatest female wrestlers in the world – and constantly stealing the show with her performances.
While Shirai joining the main roster could extend her time in WWE, she’s also likely to be lost in the shuffle. The women’s division is one that has been a mess as of late, namely focused on a few key names. Add in the insane travel schedule that comes with the WWE main roster, and combine that with wanting to spend more time with family – and you have a perfect storm that leads to Shirai exiting the company.
She would likely rejoin the Stardom roster much like former rival Kairi, as Stardom becomes a bigger company by the day despite a small roster. With Stardom set to run a joint show with NJPW, they’re going to want all the biggest names involved, which could soon include Shiari.
