Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry Cancel 4th of July Independence Day Celebrations Over SCOTUS Roe v Wade Abortion Ruling

Since the Supreme Court of the United States made the decision to overturn the Roe vs. Wade judgment, there has been a huge backlash and a number of protests from citizens, with many celebrities lending their voices to show disapproval. The Independence Day celebration created another opportunity for many to do this, and it seems Kim K and Katy Perry seized the opportunity.

Celebrities Protest Lack Of Independence For Women

On her Instagram story, the SKIMS founder shared a post that read, “4th of July has been canceled due to shortage of Independence. Sincerely, Women.” Kim was not the only Kardashian that openly expressed disapproval and took a stand against the ruling. Her sister, Kourtney Kardashian also shared he same message. Katy Perry, whose 2010 hit pop song, Firework, has been accepted as the unofficial anthem for the Independence Day celebrations for years, also took to Twitter to show her disapproval.

On her Twitter page, she wrote, “‘Baby you’re a firework’ is a 10 but women in the Us have fewer rights than an actual sparkler smh.” Kim K and Katy Perry are not the only celebrities that took a stand against the ruling, as many others, mostly women, chose not to celebrate Independence Day.

Oscar-winning actor, Jessica Chastain was also one of the online protesters as she posted a picture of herself and she had her middle fingers up. In her caption, she wrote, “Happy Independence Day from me and my reproductive rights.” A large number of people supported the actress’ statement in the comment section as they agreed with her; “damn right sister,” someone said.

“Let’s start a revolution!” Singer Madonna Ciccone asked her followers as she posted a black and white video of a woman being dragged by armed men. She then related the video to the happenings in the state as she said, “this is what life looks like if you’re a woman living in America.. It’s not Independence Day for us.” Some other celebrities, like Lisaa Rinna still celebrated Independence Day but did so while speaking out on the issue.

It’s been about a week since the Joe vs. Wade ruling was overturned, and the effect it has on a lot of women is that now more than half of the states can ban abortion. This has a big impact on the lives of women living in the United States.
