Over the past two years, we’ve seen an increase of female wrestling on NJPW wrestling events. The talent from the Stardom roster have been on the biggest NJPW shows, getting a chance to show their skills – and that’s just the beginning. Later this year, NJPW & Stardom will run a joint-show together, and that show will also come with the debut of the IWGP Women’s Championship.
Stardom & NJPW Work Together To Create IWGP Women’s Championship

★ NJPW and Stardom are creating this title for defences not only in Japan but also in the US on New Japan Pro Wrestling events, appealing to the world with the rich IWGP history!
This is a massive move for women’s wrestling on NJPW shows, which could lead to bigger chances for wrestlers from Stardom – and should ensure NJPW Strong events also start to contain women’s wrestling. Historically, Japanese wrestling companies would stick to one gender, with NJPW, AJPW and Pro Wrestling generally strict on only having male wrestlers, while the likes of Stardom, TJPW, and the classics of AJW were all female.
However, things are changing – and for years, companies like DDT would promote talent of all genders on their shows. This is by far the biggest move to changing these outdated business practices. If there will be a tournament to set up the first champion remains unclear, or where it will fit into the hierarchy of belts in Stardom.
Right now, the date for the joint show between NJPW & Stardom is set for November 20th, 2022. That is where we are expected to see this championship enter circulation. If a tournament is to be held, we might well see Stardom and freelance female talent on NJPW shows through October & November.
