Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, made their decision to leave the Royal family about two years ago. Ever since, there has been a gap between the couple and the Royal family. A speech and language expert has now confirmed that this gap might be causing a change in the way the Duke of Sussex speaks.
Upon the couple’s move to California, they had a number of jobs to earn money, most of which involved public speaking. Prince Harry works as the chief impact officer for BetterUp, which is a mental health company. The Duke appeared in a recent video for the company where he was speaking about mental resilience and the “greatness” everyone has within them with psychologist Adam Grant and Chloe Kim—Olympic snowboarder, and a member of the company, Blu Mendoza.
Expert Claim Prince Harry’s New Accent is a Proof He No Longer Relates With the Royals
It was noticed that the Prince was speaking a bit differently. Following the video, the founder of London Speech Workshop and speech and language expert, Emma Serlin made some comments about the Duke’s new accent and what it could be interpreted as. According to Serlin, the Prince “adapted his accent to connect more with the people around him.”
Serlin said that now that the Prince is no longer with the Royal family and does not relate with them as much, his accent “now sounds much more rounded and middle rather than upper class. He is now of the people in a much more overt way.”
She also added that “he has always tuned the classic royal accent down and softened it, but previously he was much more aligned with the Royal family” and now, “he has adapted his accent to connect more with the people he is meeting and seeing everyday and the people around him.” To state that it was more circumstantial, she said, “ultimately, I’m sure he would heighten his accent if he was around the royal family again, but it’s really about adapting to build connections.”
Many might wonder if the Prince’s accent now sounds more American because he married Meghan, an American woman, and has been living in her country for a few years now. The language and accent expert denied that was the case. She stated that the Prince does not, in her opinion, sound American.
She said, “He does, however, sound as though he has taken the edge off the received pronunciation that was very much part of his previously somewhat ‘posh’ accent.” She gave an example of a word and concluded that “there were only a few instances in this video where he started to sound Americanised” as it is much more about how he has softened and taken off the edge of having a posh accent.
