It’s never easy being part of a tag team in the WWE as they nearly always find themselves split up with one becoming a star and the other usually falling into obscurity except for the hardcore fans.
A couple of quick examples of this happening are the Rockers and Hart Foundation, in particular Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.
After they went into singles action, Marty Jannetty and Jim Neidhart never really returned to their previous level and faded into the sunset.
Recently, Heavy Machinery was broken up to push Otis, and now he’s teamed with Chad Gable in Alpha Academy while Tucker was released.
With recent plans for Montez Ford to move into the singles division looking more legitimate after he put on a good amount of muscle mass, Angelo Dawkins will be looking to prove himself as a singles competitor as well.
But while the announcers have been praising Ford right and left, Dawkins has found himself looking to prove himself to fans as well, as many have bought into the myth that he’s not a top flight talent.
Stepping up
On Corey Graves’ After The Bell Podcast, Angelo Dawkins talked about how he’s perceived by fans and his plans.
“Everybody thinks for some reason, some weird reason, that I’m not good. I’m very unselfish. I do whatever I can to make the match great. Tez is obviously the more out there guy, so I don’t mind being in the background. I star in my role. I’ll play my role. I’m a role player in a way, but then I had to remind everybody like, hey, dawg, you’re gonna have to put some respect on my name like, the talk is starting to piss me off now. Now you’re about to see a different me.”
The last couple of weeks on Raw, Dawkins has been more aggressive and in many ways has taken the spotlight from Ford, returning it to a shared moment in tag team action.
It makes sense that it’s him working to become better and respond to fans and critics that are down on him for a perceived lack of ability, and it’s great to see.
The commentators have even started talking about him as much as Ford and praising him instead of acting like he’s a sidekick and it’s only helped make the Street Profits better and put him close to even footing once again.
What do you think? Will Dawkins push through and prove himself? Let us know in the comments below.
