Ric Flair has had a career second to none, and he wanted to go out with one more match. Like when Hulk Hogan wanted to face Vince McMahon at WrestleMania a couple of years ago, Ric Flair wanted to go out on his own terms.
Ric Flair’s Last Match became a pay-per-view and supershow under the banner of Jim Crockett Promotions.
It marked the first event under JCP since 1988 when Time Warner bought the cornerstone of the NWA and rebranded it as WCW.
Ric Flair Passed out Twice During his Last Match
Jim Crocket Promotions was brought back and trademarked by Conrad Thompson and Jim Crockett’s sone David Crockett, with this as their first show. Conrad said he’d give his 50% trademarks to David on August 1, 2022.
While it’ll be fun to see what JCP does for future events and if they become their own wrestling promotion again, it’s fitting that Flair would wrestle his last match under the banner where he became famous.
But that’s only part of the story.
Adding to his legacy
While it can be said Flair’s final match wasn’t the best, he is 73 years old and the fact he could get in the ring and perform was an awesome sight.
Unfortunately, Flair had a couple of scary moments before Flair and Andrade El Idolo won.
He talked about how he passed out twice due to dehydration on hit To Be the Man podcast.
“I don’t think people realized that I passed out twice.
“Well what happened was, my regimentation for training was so strict that I kept my weight, I wanted my perfect weight to be like 220 going in. So, the last day, the last day and a half, aside from all the work that we had planned for me to do, I didn’t hydrate. I had it in my mind that I had to weigh 219.
“So I went to the ring and I’m like 217 pounds, and what happened during the body of the match is I just became dehydrated. I actually, when I was standing on the apron, I looked at Jay, which started a wheel of motion. I said, ‘Man, I think I’m getting sick’ because I was getting light-headed.”
He insisted it had nothing to do with his heart that nearly killed him in 2017 when he was placed in a medically induced coma.
Jay Lethal misunderstood Flair saying he felt sick and passed the word during the match to hurry it along. After it was over and he was in the locker room, the Undertaker came to Flair’s aid.
“My hand started trembling, but it was all dehydration. I had two doctors in there right away with me and everything, and The Undertaker came running in. I had like six beers there. He took them out of my hand and said, ‘You’re drinking two Gatorades first.’ So I drank two, and that’s all it was. I underestimated the importance of keeping hydrated, which is really big, especially when I lost that much weight and trained that hard.”
As scary as it was for us hearing this afterwards, it could’ve been far worse as some of Flair’s friends didn’t want to be there as they were afraid he’d die in the ring.
The fact is, it fits Ric Flair. He’s always been flashy and displayed sportsmanship above most others, so him going out in a flurry of drama fits with his career perfectly.
We’re glad he closed out his career on his terms and he’s in good health following it.
