One of the biggest legends in the history of professional wrestling is easily Steve Borden, aka Sting. Having made his career in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Impact Wrestling, and most crucially – World Championship Wrestling, Sting did it all by the time he got a chance to make his way to WWE in 2015. However, upon arriving – then WWE CEO Vince McMahon, apparently had no clue who he even was.
Vince McMahon Didn’t Know If Sting Would Get A Reaction In WWE
On an episode of Busted Open Radio, Road Dogg would take a moment to talk about Vince McMahon’s reaction to bringing Sting into the company. Road Dogg would be quoted saying the following.
”Vince had no idea who Sting was. He didn’t know. He asked us, “is this guy over?” I don’t know if it was a performance, but if it was, the guy deserves an Oscar. He just didn’t watch that. He was so laser focused on the WWF that he lived in a bubble. He literally asked us multiple times, “this guy is gonna get a reaction, right?
Coskey, myself and multiple others told him that Sting was the flagship guy for WCW, the main star. He had no idea. We wanted to make the match different, and we came up with the nWo vs DX idea to spice the match up. Also, at the moment, we were all under the impression that it was Hunter vs Rock at the next year’s Mania. That was our main event for WM 32. The biggest match we could put on. We had to have Hunter look strong. He couldn’t lose.”
Sting would have a handful of matches in WWE, starting with his match against Triple H at WrestleMania – and ending with a back injury against Seth Rollins.
What’s He Been Up To Following WWE?
Since his WWE run has ended, Sting has found his way into the ring again for AEW. Serving as the mentor for Darby Allin – Sting has entered some high profile tag team matches, and has been prone to jumping off high structures on PPV. It’s widely been considered one of the best legacy runs a wrestler has ever had – and miles ahead of his lacking WWE run.
