Since AEW started they had one constant and that was WWE Creative’s inability to put together consistent storylines or quality shows more than occasionally.
We were starved for alternatives and AEW gave us that and it helped open the door for other promotions as they pulled eyes away from the WWE.
Then after the pandemic started and the WWE made questionable budget cuts to their talent, they inadvertently breathed new life into the Indie scene and bolstered them and AEW.
But that was under Vince McMahon’s increasingly myopic and narrowing tunnel vision that was a far cry from the glory days of the Golden, Attitude, and Ruthless Aggression Eras.
With Vince retiring following the discovery of payouts to allegedly keep his alleged affairs quiet, Stephanie McMahon and Nick Kahn took over as co-CEOs and Triple H is now the head of WWE Creative.
While it’s impossible to turn the Titanic around on a dime, there has been marked improvement in the shows since he’s been running them and the culture behind the scenes has reportedly improved.
Changing the game
One wrestling fan that’s taken notice of the WWE’s change in direction is AEW President Tony Kahn.
Tony appeared on SportsGrid for an interview, and he explained that he thinks the change in the WWE is a good thing for the wrestling business overall.
He also talked about how the change is going to open up more opportunities for talent to go back and forth between the companies, and how it gives talent more negotiating options.
This, in turn, could lead to more wrestlers wanting to leave AEW to return to the WWE or give it a try with the new culture being installed there.
“Yeah, I think that’s always been a concern, but now probably more so than ever. I imagine that great wrestlers are going to be in demand. Again, I think this is probably going to be good for the wrestling fans because that’s one of the most exciting things about pro wrestling is free agency.”
With Triple H wanting to make work fun again and the WWE shifting from sports entertainment to more of a sports based company it’s going to have a lot to offer other talent.
And with rumored rumblings going on behind the scenes at AEW anything’s possible.
There will be numerous fans and critics that’ll point out Tony should worry about AEW and not necessarily what the WWE is doing, but after years of taking shots we doubt it’ll slow down now.
Besides, Tony’s a wrestling fan and this comes across as him talking as a fan instead of an owner, and we agree that this is going to make some fun times for wrestlers and fans going forward.
