With CM Punk injured and expected to miss eight months of action, we have a tournament to crown a new AEW World Champion. Already we’ve seen Bryan Danielson move onto the next round, but tonight we find the man who will move on to face Jon Moxley next week on AEW Dynamite. We have two former TNT Champions, and men who are incredibly familiar with one another.
It’s former three time champion Sammy Guevara vs. one time champion Darby Allin. Both are absolute underdogs in this field, being the two men to have never held a world championship, giving them all the more to prove. They tend to bring the absolute best out of each other, and tonight will be no exception.
Sammy Guevara Gets A Tainted Victory
They would lock up had to begin, opting to not kick things off with a series of violent stunts like in the past. Allin would throw the first heavy strikes, before Guevara would look for a pinfall. He’d be caught into the Gory Special, before Allin moved into the Fujiwara Arambar – showcasing his underrated match wrestling game.
Guevara would find the bottom rope, before absorbing two Coffin Splashes. He’d be able to be set up and hit a superplex, before rolling into another suplex. Allin would hit the knees to the head to stop the third, before they tumbled to the floor without breaking grip, and Allin hitting a suplex. Tay Melo formed a human shield to block the suicide dive, before Allin would dive anyways – and Guevara caught him with a cutter.
Back in the ring, Allin would be put into the surfboard stretch – before a cocky pinfall. ALlin went after the eyes of Guevara to break a second stretch before avoiding a Shooting Star Press and hit the Code Red. On the floor, Melo would distract as Guevara hit a kick to the face. He’d get caught up with kissing his wife, before being nailed with a tope suicida. In the ring, Allin would grab the wedding ring of Guevara, which was played as a distraction for a jumping knee smash.
Guevara would hit the double jump cutter, but would only get a two count. He’d look to hit a Coffin Drop, but Allin avoided. Anna J.A.S would hit the ringside area, allowing for Guevara to hit a low blow, before a powerbomb onto Allin’s skateboard the G.T.H for the victory.
