UFC welterweight Belal Muhammad is not afraid of the boogeyman. Khamzat Chimaev is running roughshod over the rest of the 170-pound division, but after he failed to make weight at UFC 279 by eight pounds, Belal Muhammad took to social media to taunt the Chechen star. Muhammad started by calling Khamzat “fat”, and continued by blasting his choice of opponents.
“It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Chimaev. You know, I have a lot of doctor friends in the field and we were talking about his medical condition. A lot of them are telling me it could be serious – of why he didn’t make weight. They say – it was like a scientific term – they called him fat. Yeah, I think that was it. He’s just fat.
Belal Muhammad Calls Out “Fat” Khamzat
So maybe he starts eating healthier, starts being more disciplined, stops with the ‘llen Iverson practice. ‘We talking about practice?’ Because obviously he’s skilled.”
Chimaev has fought in the UFC at both welterweight and middleweight, and has had no obvious issues making the 170-pound limit thus far. Due to medical reasons, Chimaev had to abandon his weight cut at UFC 279, so many are questioning whether he will continue at welterweight, or move back up to middleweight where he will be more comfortable.
Muhammad was far from surprised to see Chimaev obliterate Kevin Holland on the weekend. Chimaev’s style is rooted in powerful, dominant wrestling, and Kevin Holland, as Muhammad pointed out, is notorious for his lack of wrestling ability.
“[It was] pretty much what I expected. Holland’s weakness is wrestling. Chimaev’s strength is wrestling. Holland did have a couple of really good grappling sequences, and it would have been really interesting to see if he got past the first couple of minutes, because that was all sprint for Chimaev and he kept locking in the D’Arce (choke), squeezing, squeezing and squeezing. Holland didn’t have no give up in him. He was trying to fight out, but Chimaev is just relentless with the grappling.”
Belal Muhammad is currently ranked #5 in the UFC welterweight division. He is currently riding a three-fight win streak, which could be eight if not for a no-contest against the current champion, Leon Edwards, last year. Muhammad’s most recent victory came over Vicente Luque, which saw Belal Muhammad dominate Luque over five rounds to avenge a knockout loss in 2016.
