Earlier today, we would report on injuries sustained by CM Punk during his match with Jon Moxley in the main event of AEW All Out. At the time, full details were not known – with all that was known being Punk was hurt, and would not be in town for tonights episode of AEW Dynamite. However, we now know the full extend of Punk’s injury – and he will be undergoing surgery, and the AEW World Championship will become vacant.
CM Punk Requires Surgery Following Full Gear, New AEW World Champion To Be Crowned
This information was learned after a planned media call between AEW & Punk, with the need for surgery being revealed. Due to this, a new champion will be crowned – likely at the upcoming AEW Grand Slam event on September 21st. This is the second time that CM Punk would be injured in 2022, both times happening as he won the AEW World Championship.
It’s highly unlikely that due to this, AEW will not be putting the AEW World Championship on Punk ever again, with his body proving unreliable. His AEW career might become something more akin to Sting, who wrestles on bigger occasions and has stayed firmly out of the title hunt, despite him and Darby Allin being dominant as a tag team. Punk as champion was a fine idea, but twice now it has not worked out.
MJF Is Ready To Be Crowned Champion
When it comes to crowning a new champion, we already know one half of the coming match. In the opening match of All Out, a masked man would win the Casino Ladder Match after the aid of Stokely Hathaway, Austin & Colton Gunn, W. Morrisey, Lee Moriarty & Ethan Page. This would be revealed as MJF later in the night, with him as the #1 contender to the AEW World Championship.
While the plan was likely to have a third massive match between MJF & Punk, the need for surgery means this will need to wait. We just don’t know who will face MJF for the match over the vacant title, if it will be another Interim championship situation like we are currently seeing with the AEW World Woman’s Championship, or when this match will happen.
