Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96 after ruling for seven decades. Queen Elizabeth died on Thursday, September 8, 2022, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The Queen ascended to the throne in 1952 after the passing away of her father, King George VI. Queen Elizabeth oversaw the last throes of the British empire, weathered global upheaval and domestic scandal. She also modernized the monarchy. The monarch passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland a few days after she received the newly elected prime minister, Ms Truss.

She ruled over the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms, and became one of the most popular and most powerful women ever to have ever lived. Her son, Prince Charles, immediately became King upon her death. As monarch, Queen Elizabeth will get a publicly funded state funeral. Her funeral details are expected to be released by the Buckingham palace soon.
Just after midday on the day of her death, the Queen was placed under medical supervision due to her condition. On hearing the news, dozens of onlookers, tourists and well-wishers of the Queen gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London. A lot of people are also gathered near the Queen Victoria Memorial, across from the Palace. Many other are reportedly staring through the gates.
Queen Elizabeth is not currently in her London residence. In a statement released by the palace, she reportedly “remains comfortable and at Balmoral” castle in Scotland. London tour guide Nicholas Player, visited the palace to see the queen once he finished work. The tour guide described the news of Queen Elizabeth’s declining health as “sad” but he told CNN that he was hopeful for her recovery.
“She is part of everyone’s life; she’s bridged the gap between many age groups,” Nicholas said, as he held an umbrella with a Union Jack design. He added, “(She’s) the grandmother of the nation, really, and I don’t think there’s one person who really doesn’t like her.”
