We know that all great clashes in the history of martial arts end up with trilogy bouts. Especially when the fighters won one match against each other. That is like a cry for a trilogy bout. That is the case with Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor.
Nate Diaz submitted Conor McGregor in a rear naked choke at the UFC 196 in March 2016 and put an end to Conor’s win streak. The world was in shock, Nate entered the octagon as an underdog and exited as victorious. Only a couple of months later, Conor returned the ‘favor’ and won by a split decision in their rematch at the UFC 202.
Does Nate Diaz Plan On Arranging A Conor McGregor Trilogy Through His New Promotion?
Conor McGregor is the milk cow in the UFC promotion. He is well-liked (or hated) by the audience, and as such he brings massive attention to his fights. Diaz on the other hand is one of the iconic characters of the UFC. He has actually built his career there. Being so influential in the promotion throughout their careers, it is inevitable that the duo deserves a trilogy bout arranged.
Conor McGregor is still recovering from an injury and promised to be back in the octagon early at the beginning of next year. In the meantime, Nate Diaz will fight at the UFC 279 this week. Asked about a possible trilogy bout, Nate agreed that he sees that happening somewhere ‘down the road’.
“The timing’s not on right now.” – Diaz recently stated. “We’ll worry about that later. It’s for sure going to happen at some point. … Yeah, at some point. He needs to get back on what he’s got to do, whatever that is. It’s like, when we match up, we’re going to match up. But we ain’t going nowhere.”
Although Diaz is facing the ‘last fight’ on his UFC contract, for now, he is open to fighting Conor sometime in the future. At the moment he did not give any information if he is willing to do that in the UFC, or through his own newly opened MMA promotion.
At the UFC 279, Diaz will face Khamzat Chimaev, a fighter with no losses under his belt. Diaz thinks that the UFC is backing up Chimaev in the fight and leads a biased promotion. He accuses the UFC of focusing on Chimaev and making him the better promoted fighter in the bout. That’s why Diaz decided to promote the fight using his own platform. He will promote it through Real Fight Inc.
“This fight right here that I’ve got coming up is brought to you by Real Fight Inc.” – Diaz says. “The UFC is obviously pushing their fighter on me – not with me, but against me. So this is the first real fight event that we’ve got right now, right here.”
