Buckingham Palace has shared that the crowning ceremony for King Charles III will take place Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London. British monarchs have been crowned at Westminster Abbey last 900 years.
The King’s crowning ceremony date is earlier than people speculated as it was believed that King Charles would choose June 2 as a tribute to the day when his mother, late Queen Elizabeth had her coronation in 1953. The crowning ceremony will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury as it has been done for nearly a thousand year. The palace also stated that Queen Camilla will be by her husband’s side.
Buckingham Palace Announces The Crowning Ceremony Date For King Charles III
“The Coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry,” Buckingham Palace announced. Though Charles immediately succeeded his mother after she took her last breath, he was announced as the King by the Accession Council on September 9, his coronation did not happen due to the royal mourning and so that necessary preparations can be made.
“Charles became King Charles the moment his mother died, but the coronation is to do with the job and being the monarch in the eyes of all the people,” royal historian Robert Lacey reveals. While 8,000 people attended Queen Elizabeth’s three-hour coronation in 1953, King Charles has limit his list to Westminster Abbey’s actual capacity of 2,000 for a one hour ceremony.
According to Lacey, even though Charles has allegedly mixed some ancient rituals with the modern ones the new sovereign may emphasize the religious significance of the coronation ritual. The historian said, “I would imagine the coronation ceremony will have much more interfaith quality to it,” noting the King’s strong interest in interfaith relations.
