Bray Wyatt’s The Fiend character was one of the most popular the WWE had seen in years, and if he’d been booked right he could’ve had a truly memorable run.
There were plenty of detractor on him as many classic fans don’t like the supernatural element of his character and the fact he was impervious to pain was another turn off.
The reasoning for many is that it was a great gimmick, but translating the storytelling to the ring.
The concern went beyond just the fans and critics as some of the wrestlers reportedly had trouble working with the character for various reasons.
One of those was Seth Rollins.
A different type
The Fiend had this knack for changing people after he faced them, turning them from faces to heels and vice versa.
At the time of their feud, Rollins was the Universal Championship and the face of the company and they gave us some memorable moments, and not all of them good as the debacle of their HIAC match shows.
But they’re both top flight talents and found a way to make it work, but it wasn’t as good as it could’ve been.
Rollins talked about this with Ariel Helwani of BT Sport.
“The Fiend character was just difficult. If you look at anybody that worked with the Bray Wyatt character for an extended period of time, they didn’t come out of it better than they went in.
“It was very difficult to have a story with him where aside from Randy, it was difficult for anyone. I think maybe Daniel Bryan might have escaped a little unscathed, but I mean everyone else pretty much met a dire end for their character.
“I mean that was the end for the Seth Rollins character as you knew it. The Beast Slayer character, you know?
“It was tough figuring out how to tell a good wrestling story with that character. I was not good at the phenomenology stuff. I wasn’t able to interweave that with reality enough to make what I felt was a captivating story.”
Rollins also added that he thinks it would’ve been better for Wyatt to beat him quickly at the Hell in a Cell match and have his championship run, but that wasn’t their call.
Vince McMahon wouldn’t give an inch on how he envisioned the match, and we all know how that vision turned out.
