Right now, we’re seeing the future of the WWE women’s division with some key stars in NXT. It’s impossible to deny the likes of Cora Jade & Roxanne Perez as future stars of the division, both being young and already incredibly talented. Jade in particular has been turning heads since her debut, showing skills as a beloved babyface and hated heel in a short span. It’s easy to see the names she was inspired by, but Jade would recently confirm heavy influence of two names from NXT’s past.
Cora Jade Got Into Wrestling From Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker, But Names Biggest Influence As AJ Lee
During a new interview with Fightful, Jade would be asked about what got her into the industry. Jade would be quoted saying the following.
“When I first started watching, I was eight-years-old, 2009sh, I look at Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25 as the match that got me into wrestling. At that time, I would go back and watch old women’s matches because I was so obsessed with it. I would be on my parent’s computer looking up old stuff. At that time, the women didn’t get a lot of time. Even as a young kid, I noticed that and noticed there were a lot of differences in the women versus how the men were presented.
Even as a young kid, I knew I wanted to be here, but I wanted to be a pro wrestler and wanted to have matches like the guys got to have and wanted to do all the things they got to do. I didn’t want to do all these bra and panty matches I was seeing as a kid. Even then, I knew I wanted to be so much more than that.
Seeing somebody like AJ Lee come in and even Paige and women like that, everyone after her. AJ is the first one I saw as a kid. She was the first woman to have all this merch and none of the other women got to have that at the time and she was the first person that started to make everybody see that women can do the same stuff. They can make the same sales in merch, do all this stuff. To see her do that, she instantly became my favorite. She was so relatable and I saw so much of myself in her.
AJ Lee Remains Retired, Jade Could Be Big Deal In 2023
AJ Lee has been detached from the wrestling industry since her retirement from the ring in 2015, but was recently involved in plans for the W.O.W show, which seems to have cooled off intensely. There’s always been a demand for Lee to return to the ring, given just how many wrestlers she was able to inspire during her time with the company – and the door likely remains open.
Jade just finished up a feud with Roxanne Perez, with it ending with a Weapon’s Wild match at Halloween Havoc. It’s unclear if Jade will stay with the NXT brand past 2023, with many feeling she would be ready to move to Monday Night RAW or Smackdown Live starting at the Royal Rumble.
