Bret Hart is one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. That statement is a widely accepted fact in the world of professional wrestling, with a massive resume of great matches backing it up. However, one match stands above all else in terms of his career – due to the outcome. The infamous Montreal Screwjob, where Vince McMahon & Shawn Michaels ensured that Hart could not leave the WWF to take the WWF Championship to their biggest competitor, World Championship Wrestling.
Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels Were Able To Resolve Their Differences A Decade Later
While there have been a million and one theories on just what happened that night, the one thing that can be confirmed is that it caused a rift to form between Bret Hart and the WWF. Hart would not return to the company until over a decade later – after he had been retired due to injuries suffered as part of the WCW roster. A kick gone wrong from Goldberg caused a concussion, which would be crucial in the retirement of Hart.
When Hart returned to WWE in 2006 to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, things remained icy. However in 2010, he would have an in-ring segment with Shawn Michaels, and they were able to shake hands. This moment was as real as it gets in professional wrestling – and was the moment they buried the hatchet. Hart just wishes it came sooner, or the rift never happened at all.
Always Finding Ways To Take Shots At Goldberg
Recently, Hart & Michaels would sit down to speak about The Montreal Screwjob with Ringer. During this, Hart had the following to say about his history with Michaels.
“We had our issues over the years. But I watched Undertaker and Shawn Michaels wrestle at one of the WrestleManias. Even then, I had such a bitterness towards Shawn, but I had to admit it was one of the greatest matches I ever watched. That’s where I ended up deciding to make friends with Shawn and bury the hatchet and all that. It was very truthful, that little storyline with me and Vince and Shawn.
Me and Shawn making up in the ring (in 2010) and shaking hands and all that, that was all very real and very moving for me. And was not something that was orchestrated. Shawn wanted that off his back and I was in a position to take it off his back and that was the best resolution for both of us. We’ve been friends ever since. And I’m grateful that he’s in a better place today. I wish that none of the bad history that we had-had ever happened. I wished I’d never left for WCW because I probably wouldn’t have had a stroke and I probably wouldn’t have had to wrestle Bill Goldberg.”
