Recently, we saw a series of dramatic events surrounding William Regal in AEW. Having entered the company in early 2022, he formed the Blackpool Combat Club with Jon Moxley & Bryan Danielson – before turning on Moxley in favour of MJF at Full Gear 2022. This was followed by Regal being punched out with his own brass knuckles by MJF, and he was last seen on AEW TV being taken out of the arena in an ambulance. This might be the final time we see Regal in AEW, as he seems to be set to return to WWE.
William Regal Is Effectively Done With AEW, Set To Return To WWE
This would be reported by Fightful Select, stating that Regal is effectively done with AEW. He’s expected to return to WWE in a backstage role starting in January of 2023. The attack by MJF was a fine way to right him off TV, especially after Bryan Danielson set up the attack with stating how fragile Regal is in his old age when talking down Jon Moxley from attacking him the week before.
Many viewed the choice to release William Regal from WWE in the first place as one of the worst choices Vince McMahon made in his final year in charge. Regal was the on-screen GM on the NXT brand, one of the company’s top talent scouts and one of the head coaches in the WWE Performance Center. Add in a very tight relationship with Triple H, and bringing Regal back is a no-brainer of a choice.
Might Not Find His Way Right Back Onto TV
It remains unclear if Regal will have an on-screen role within WWE upon his return. Shawn Micheals has settled into a GM style role for NXT, and both Smackdown Live & Monday Night RAW are running fine without an on-screen authority figure at the moment. It seems a waste to not use someone as talented with a microphone as Regal on TV – but Triple H might wait for find a new role for him on TV.
With NXT Europe set to launch in 2023, it’s likely Regal could find an on-screen role in that brand, being one of the biggest WWE stars to ever come from Europe. Johnny Saint was the acting GM of NXT UK, but rarely appeared on TV. Regal also is more recognizable than Saint to WWE fans.
