WWE Intended To Run Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena At WrestleMania 38

With 2023 officially here, it’s time to get on the Road to WrestleMania in WWE. Starting at the Royal Rumble, we will see the biggest show of the year for WWE built up – as they shoot for another big two day event. Many major names are expected to make their way to the show, including potentially John Cena & The Rock – who spend most of their time in Hollywood these days. We know WWE intends to run The Rock vs. Roman Reigns, but original plans for John Cena saw him against Cody Rhodes.

Vince McMahon Wanted Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena At WrestleMania 38

This would be reported by Fightful Select, stating that back when Vince McMahon was in charge of the creative direction in WWE – Rhodes vs. Cena was pencilled in for WrestleMania 38. It’s clear why this match was planned, as with Rhodes potentially set to be the top babyface in WWE for the next few years, WWE wants him to be in a huge role at WrestleMania. Having him defeat Cena would leave a lasting memory in the minds of fans, and could be the match that cements Rhodes as their top name.

Rhodes is still out with a Torn Pec, but is expected to be back well in time for WrestleMania 38, if not returning at the Royal Rumble. With the Cena plans likely pushed to the background, Rhodes will be either facing Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns at the event. WWE intends to split the WWE & Universal Championships before WrestleMania, with Rollins expected to win the WWE Championship at some point over the next few months.

If The Rock is able to be at WrestleMania, he will be facing Reigns. But if WWE can’t get The Rock, Cody Rhodes is their backup plan to face Reigns. In this situation, the planned match for Rollins at WrestleMania will be Drew McIntyre, building on their match from Money in the Bank 2020, which was one of the best matches of the pandemic era.

Plans Have A Lot Of Time To Change

With WrestleMania still four months away, there is a lot of times for plans to change. Even with Triple H now in charge of WWE’s creative direction, plans will still change – as there is a lot of moving parts involved with WWE at any moment. We don’t know what John Cena is planned to do at WrestleMania 38, but WWE is still pushing to have him on the show. There’s a chance he faces Drew McIntyre, who would be left without an opponent if The Rock is able to make the show.

Would you have enjoyed Rhodes vs. Cena at WrestleMania 38? Should WWE revisit that match for Summerslam 2023? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
