Ricky Starks has a chance to start 2023 with one of the biggest victories of his entire career. After failing to take the AEW World Championship away from MJF, Starks would be given an offer to join the Jericho Appreciation Society and learn from Chris Jericho himself. Knowing his value, Starks would turn this offer down – and instead called out Chris Jericho for a match here tonight. It’s a new year in AEW, which can bring new highs to the career of Starks – and that starts with defeating a Hall of Fame level talent.
Ricky Starks & Chris Jericho Start The Year With A Fight
Both men ended 2022 with major losses, as Starks lost to MJF with the AEW World Championship on the line – and Jericho was defeated in a massive upset by rookie Action Andretti. They now have a chance to start 2023 with a victory, with Jericho hitting a quick arm drag as the match began. Starks would hit a shoulder tackle in response, before Jericho would go for a slap.
This resulted in Jericho being battered into the corner with some strikes, and fled to the floor. Jericho was able to regain his footing, nailing Starks into the corner with some heavy lariats. Starks would be able to walk the ropes and hit an jumping axehandle smash. The facebuster would follow, with Jericho kicking out at two.
Starks was sent out to the apron, and while able to block the triangle dropkick, Jericho would head out and hit the brainbuster off the apron. Jericho would choke Starks back in the ring with his boot, before sending him off the ropes with a dropkick. The cocky pinfall would follow, firing up Starks in the process.
Starks Won The Battle – Not The War
Starks came off the ropes with a lariat, followed by a dropkick of his own. Jericho would slip away from the attempt at Roshambo, only to be dropped with a powerbomb moments later – getting a two count. Codebreaker would land for Jericho, but Starks blocked Judas Effect – only to be tripped into the Walls Of Jericho.
Starks would near the ropes, but a bat shot from Matt Menard as Angelo Parker ran a distraction nearly knocked him out. Somehow, he survived and broke the pinfall. Inside Cradle would get a 2.9 count, before Starks hit the Tornado DDT. Finally, the spear would land – and Starks has defeated Chris Jericho.
An 8 on 1 beatdown would follow from the entire Jericho Appreciation Society. Starks would get backup in the form of Action Andretti with a steel chair, looking for revenge after having a fireball thrown at him by Jericho. A low blow from Anna Jay would shut him down, before Jericho used the steel chair. Jaker Hager set up a table at ringside, and Starks was sent through with a powerbomb.
Hangman Page Will Be Cleared Next Week
The last time Hangman Page was involved in an AEW match, he was knocked unconscious by a lariat from Jon Moxley. This put Page on the shelf with a nasty concussion, and Page is dying to get his revenge. Moxley has taken to mocking Page, claiming he’s too soft for this industry – but if Page can be cleared, he knows where to find Moxley next week. Tonight, we get a medical update on Page from Tony Schiavone.
Schiavone would welcome Page down to the ring, with a great reaction for the former AEW World Champion. Page wanted nothing more than to say that he is ready to return to the ring, but that unfortunately is not the case. If he gets into another fight with Moxley, his return gets pushed back another week – and that’s not what anyone wants.
If Page gets that last brain scan however, he will be cleared to fight Jon Moxley next week. Page doesn’t care if it’s in catering, the ring or the parking lot – he will “knock his dick into the dirt”. Moxley would march to the ring, saying that he’s shocked Page even made it here tonight.
He’s sick of people being sorry for Page, considering everything that he’s went through in his career – all because Page was knocked out. However, Page isn’t a stranger to being knocked out, that’s a part of the job. Page isn’t mad about that, he’s mad about how Moxley called him out and cracked jokes.
Moxley nearly took his career away, fundamentally changed Pages life – and he has jokes? Page has had two months to stew on his issues with Moxley, and has two in the chamber with his name on them – and Moxley gets them next week.
