Prince Harry recalled an uncomfortable moment that occurred after Meghan Markle cracked a joke after their first Trooping the Colour, an event to honour the late Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.
Prince Harry Recalls Meghan’s Joke Backfiring During Trooping The Colour Celebrations-‘A Yawning Silence Threatened To Swallow Us All Whole’
In his book Spare, Harry recalls the couple being in the UK as part of their first public appearance as a married couple. During the event, the pair rode in the same carriage before assembling in the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the remainder of the firm to welcome the gathering of supporters.
Harry stated that everyone was in good spirits amid the Trooping of the Colour, yet the joyous atmosphere allegedly shifted after Meghan made a joke about the gathering to Kate when she asked the Duchess of Sussex what she thought about the festival.
In his book, Harry wrote: “But then: Kate asked Meg what she thought of her first Trooping the Colour. And Meg joked: Colourful. And a yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole.”
After an uncomfortable exchange, Harry noted that a few days later Meghan made her first journey with the late Queen. He said that even though Meghan was nervous, the two had a great connection and shared a mutual love for their dogs.
Harry also mentioned how the Duchess and the Queen talked about motherhood, with Meghan sharing her longing to be a parent at some point.
In spite of the incident in 2018, the couple attended the Trooping the Colour in 2019 and recently, in 2022, when they went back to England for the first time since their departure from the Royal Family.
The fans on social media understood Harry’s frustrations. A certain subset felt that royal custom may have played a part in the awkward atmosphere.
One person wrote: “That’s the problem with royal protocols. Just one single wrong word and your considered thin air for the rest of your life.”
