Since Vince McMahon’s return to the WWE to facilitate a potential sale of the company, there have been a long list of possible buyers, with Saudi Arabia remaining the most likely purchases in the minds of many.
Saudi Arabia has been accused of trying to sports wash their history of human abuses as well as their treatment of women as they’ve been throwing their money around to buy various sports properties.
Saudi Arabia Tried to Buy Formula 1; Is this a Sign of Things to Come for the WWE
Saudi Arabia’s PIF recently backed an attempt to overthrow the PGA as the preeminent golfing organization with LIV Golf, but more recently they reportedly tried to buy Formula 1 from Liberty Media.
They also own a controlling interest in Premier League’s Newcastle United.
According to various reports, they offered Liberty just shy of $20 billion, but Liberty was unwilling to sell.
This isn’t anything new as the Saudis paid $650 million for a ten year deal to host Formula 1 Grand Prix two years ago.
Is the WWE next?
Despite reports that a deal with Saudi Arabia isn’t in place, it’s hard to envision McMahon passing up billions for his company he grew into a worldwide dominant company.
While Liberty and WWE have similar deals to hold shows in Saudi Arabia, Liberty isn’t willing to sell while the WWE is looking for potential buyers.
This doesn’t mean they will sell, but it’ll have to be the right buyer with the right funds.
WWE shows like Crown Jewel are always sell outs as the product is huge overseas and if there’s more of a focus on it in Saudi Arabia it could become even bigger.
But that doesn’t mean a sale will happen as McMahon will have a criteria of his own new owners must meet.
He was reported saying that he thought Stephanie McMahon would succeed him in the WWE because she had a similar energy to his.
Others have shared their thoughts on who they think should buy the WWE with the Rock saying the new owners should be as passionate about the business as McMahon is, and the Blue Meanie thinks Amazon should buy it because of their steaming platform and they sell everything.
If nothing else, Saudi Arabia remains a viable alternative as a buyer for the WWE, and we don’t see that changing any time soon.
