Back in 2019, professional wrestling fans were shocked to hear that Dean Ambrose would refuse to sign a new contract with WWE. Following a disaster of a heel turn in 2018, he was burnt out on the company – and ready to find his new path. This would lead him to the freshly formed All Elite Wrestling, making his debut following the main event of Kenny Omega & Chris Jericho during the first show in AEW history, Double or Nothing 2019. Since then, Moxley has become a three time AEW World Champion – as his gamble paid off.
Jon Moxley Knew Joining AEW Was A Risk
During an appearance on The Justin Kinner Show, Moxley would reflect on joining the AEW roster, and how he knew it was a gamble from the start. Moxley would be quoted saying the following.
“It was a risk for everybody. Me and Chris Jericho always joked that we were getting in the raft and going down the river. We had no idea what was going to come. It was all just a shot in the dark, but we all had faith. If I have a lasting impact on the business, it would probably be that I helped AEW get off the ground, and I absolutely refuse to let this place ever go to hell. I will ride or die with this place. I won’t ever let it go downhill or suck or anything like that.”
Signed With AEW Through 2028
Moxley recently signed a new five year contract with AEW, ensuring he will stick with the company through 2028. He’s all but confirmed this will be his final full time contract in professional wrestling, with this contract also putting Moxley in more backstage roles in the company. AEW shows no signs of slowing down, with their steady growth remaining strong since 2019.
Come 2028, there’s always going to be a chance Moxley will return to WWE – where a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame would be waiting, if not just for his time with The Shield. The industry can change a lot in one year, let alone five years – but the one thing that will not change is the passion Moxley has for the industry.
