The WWE run of Samoa Joe is one of serious ups and downs. He is the only man to be a three time NXT Champion, had some time on commentary, and even challenged Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship of the only WWE Great Balls Of Fire event in company history. However, his final years of the company will be remembered as he was released from the company twice within the same year. He was cut from the WWE main roster, brought back on an NXT contract, and released after he defeated Karrion Kross for the NXT Championship – and from there, made his way to All Elite Wrestling.
Samoa Joe Speaks On Being Released From WWE Twice
Samoa Joe would be the latest guest on the Renee Paquette run “The Sessions” podcast, where he would have a chance to speak on his two WWE releases, saying he was simply a pawn in a much bigger game of chess in WWE. Joe was quoted saying the following.
“As I understand it, unconfirmed, there’s issues between the two upper echelons of management and they were playing out their war with the careers and the contracts of the people underneath them. So after the initial one, I mean, I didn’t have much of a chance to grieve because essentially I was hired back within hours. The second time, I just kind of chuckled because I realized it was very much the same situation. At the same time, I mean, I wasn’t bitter or mad. I mean, the truth of it is, and really this is to give WWE some credence, was that I was expensive.
I was expensive to keep around and if cutting my contract they said saved the company money, trust me, I believe they did. So I wasn’t hot about that. It was more just the silliness of the situation and what they were doing and the reasoning why they’re doing it, which I can’t officially confirm, but I’ve heard from enough people that have a pretty good idea, including many of the people involved. After that, I think I spent a day kind of pissed, like I said, more of the situation than the actual firing, and then all these super awesome opportunities literally materialized out of nowhere.”
Ending His Feud With Darby Allin Tonight
Since making his way to AEW, Samoa Joe has been able to find some success. He would defeat Minoru Suzuki to claim the Ring of Honor World Television Championship, and at Full Gear 2022 – would take the TNT Championship from Wardlow. Calling himself the “King of Television”, Joe would be able to defend against the likes of Wardlow, Juice Robinson, & Darby Allin before losing against Allin in a rematch.
Joe will be in action tonight on AEW Dynamite, as he has his third and likely feud ending match with Allin over the TNT Championship. They have been the best matches Joe has been involved in since before his time in WWE, with Allin being the perfect opponent for the hard hitting Joe.
