When Apollo Crews arrived down in NXT, he had one goal in mind – win the NXT Championship. His first run in NXT was cut short, leading to him being directionless on the WWE main roster, and now he wants to redeem himself. He came up short at NXT Deadline, which was followed by a loss to Carmelo Hayes on the first episode of NXT of the year. Crews got the win back in a tag team match, but tonight we truly find out who is better. It’s a Best 2 out of 3 falls match – as Crews & Hayes look to leave it all in the ring.
Neither Man Foolishly Rushes Into The Action
Both men would take a moment to breathe as the bell rang, with Crews grabbing a Wrist Lock only for Hayes to be able to work his way free. Front Facelock would be applied, but again – Hayes was able to slip free. Rear Waist Lock would be countered into a Side Headlock, with Crews finally able to ground Hayes briefly before ending up in a Headscissors.
Crew would be able to slip free, and this match would gain some speed as he hit the ropes. Hayes would stop him in his tracks with a slap, only for Crews to come back twice as hard. Crews would be sent into the corner, but used his uncanny agility to break free – with Hayes able to avoid a dropkick. A catapult would see Hayes land on the ropes for a crossbody, but was shot from the sky with a dropkick.
Oklahoma Stampede powerslam into the corner would punish the back of Hayes, before some heavy handed strikes from the former United States Champion. There was now a Bullseye on the back of Hayes, which Crews used for a backbreaker. A springboard from Hayes was caught into a German Suplex, with Trick Williams distracting Crews before Hayes took a second.
Hayes would try to slip out to get a cheap shot on Crews, only to be run down with a lariat and having his breath taken away with a moonsault. Williams would grab a steel chair and took a seat at ringside, having the best seat in the house as Hayes was taken up into a delayed vertical suplex. Crews would be sent out to the floor by Hayes, allowing for him to regain control of the match – attacking the neck of Crews with a submission.
Carmelo Hayes Makes Apollo Crews Tap Out For The First Fall
Side headlock would put the pressure on the neck of Crews, ensuring that even when he got free – Hayes would remain in control, as he hit a stiff Short Arm Lariat. Hayes would maintain wrist control for another lariat, but Crews would counter and hit two German Suplexes before the release Northern Lights Suplex launched Hayes. Crews would gain some momentum with some fast lariats, before blocking an attempt at the Gordbuster.
Stinger Splash would land, with Hayes sent to the apron and dropped with an Enziguri – only to be pulled into the ring with a Deadlift Superplex – with Crews making it look easy. Hayes would block the Angle Slam and try for a Crossface, with Crews breaking free. La Mistica landed – but Crews refused to give up the first fall.
Pop Up Cutter into the Crossface would lead to Crews tap out, choosing to not risk injury. Crews would have to get two falls in a row now to get the win – but there was not much behind the strikes, as Hayes would just throw Crews face first into the ring ropes. Hayes would take a second too long following up, taking a trio of German Suplexes and a standing moonsault for a near fall.
Apollo Crews Gets Shut Out
Crews would be set up in the corner by Hayes, with the Fade Away nearly ending this match just like that. Hayes would be caught off guard again with a Blockbuster DDT, which somehow wasn’t enough for a fall. A jumping high knee would be followed up by the Angle Slam – with Hayes ending up in a Pop Up Death Valley Driver.
Williams would loosen up one of the turnbuckle covers, only for Hayes to be run into it. The former Commander Azez would show up to take Williams out – back by the name of Dabba Kato. A high five would follow, with Crews distracted for a moment. Hayes would be able hit Nothing But Net and this was a clean sweep for Carmelo Hayes.
After the match, Kato would prevent Hayes from getting more damage in, only to powerbomb Crews in the middle of the ring. Crews doesn’t have any allies clearly, but a big problem in the form of Dabba Kato.
