Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has made a name for himself as the highest paid actor in Hollywood with fun movies that tend not to take themselves too seriously.
The Rock essentially plays the same character in all of his roles much like John Wayne did, and it makes sense for an actor if they find a niche that works for them and entertains fans.
But there are grumblings that the Rock’s ego may have gotten the better of him as he reportedly tried to take over the struggling DC movie universe with some backstage shenanigans.
His alleged goal was to have his passion project, “Black Adam”, become the center of the DC universe alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman.
This seems like it’s just a rumor at the moment as there aren’t others coming out to corroborate the story, but reports by The Wrap indicate the Rock vetoed a post credits scene in “Black Adam” where Zachary Levi’s Shazam would’ve been recruited by Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) and others into the Justice Society of America.
The vetoed scene ended up being show halfway through “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” credits.
The Rock also reportedly wouldn’t allow any Black Adam characters to appear in the segment.
While “Black Adam” grossed $393 million worldwide, it’s believed by some that the Rock’s actions my have crippled both the “Black Adam” and “Shazam” franchises.
DC’s problems run deeper than the Rock
While it’s easy to point fingers at the Rock for “derailing” the DC universe, the fact is they’ve had deep rooted problems since the beginning of the current superhero crazy and they’ve been stuck in a distant number two slot behind Marvel.
Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to reboot their franchises, and have put James Gunn and Peter Safari in charge.
Some of he turmoil of the reboot attempt has resulted in reports that Henry Cavill won’t play Superman while Gunn and Safari are in charge, and in December the Rock said Black Adam won’t be featured again as well.
At least, not in the early part of the new reboot era.
It’s going to be interesting to see how things work out for the Rock and the DC universe, especially since the Rock’s reported attempt to reshape DC around his character hasn’t left him in the best light.
Did the Rock’s attempt to reshape the DC universe ruin his and other franchises, or is and of his behind the scenes involvement being blown out of proportion?
