When it comes to WrestleMania, there are a few WWE legends closely associated with the event. Shawn Michaels was known as Mr. WrestleMania, but it was The Undertaker who managed an epic 20-0 streak at the event. This streak ended at WrestleMania 30 at the hands of Brock Lesnar, but this was not the only time Undertaker lost at WrestleMania. At WrestleMania 33, Roman Reigns also took down the Deadman – but it’s not a fondly remembered match.
The Undertaker Was Considering Retirement Ahead Of WrestleMania 33
During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet – The Undertaker would recall his loss to Roman Reigns on that night, and how he felt going into that match. Simply put – he had no business being in a match that night, let alone the main event of WrestleMania.
“I was extremely beat up and I had toyed with the idea of hanging it up. I knew that year when I got to the Rumble, I wasn’t gonna be ready for Mania, but I’d already committed to the program. I didn’t know what we were going to do yet. I just knew that I was going to work with Roman. We got there that day and I knew I was in bad shape. My right hip, which I had surgery on right after that in Birmingham.
You know, it was just the right thing to do not knowing if I was going to be able to come back again and work anymore. So there I was, he was coming up, and he was going to be the face of the company, and it was the right thing to do. The streak had already been beaten, so it was the right thing to do business wise, because I didn’t know that I was going to come back again. I mean, the hat on the coat, all that being placed in the ring was 100% legitimate. At the end of it, I was done, and that was my way of saying goodbye. It wasn’t a plan or staged thing.”
Undertaker would retire after The Boneyard match with AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36, a cinematch match. Since then, he’s only appeared in non-wrestling roles.
