In 2020, we saw the final match from The Undertaker. While it wasn’t a traditional match, the Boneyard match with AJ Styles marked the end of his career in the ring. However, being one of the biggest legends in WWE history – The Undertaker will be no stranger to showing up on TV again in the future. His latest appearance was at RAW XXX – where he shared the ring with LA Knight & Bray Wyatt. This marked a new era of his career, where his deadman persona is being left in the past.
The Undertaker Is Done Being The Deadman
While speaking with Ariel Helwani of BT Sports, Undertaker would be asked about his RAW XXX appearance, where he looked more like the American Badass or Big Evil incarnation of the character, complete with his motorcycle. He would reveal that was his own choice, and has left the ‘old Undertaker’ in the past – saying the following.
“They had a different vision. They didn’t even know that I wasn’t going to have the hat and coat. They totally thought I was coming out as old Undertaker. I was like, no. That’s part of me and the storytelling, right? When I lifted the curtain, and when I lifted it back and pulled it back, that’s gone. It’s gone now. I won’t bring the hat and coat back out .”
Another Reinvention For The Legend
The Undertaker is someone who never stuck with a gimmick longer than he needed. He was constantly tweaking parts of his persona, which is a key reason why he’s still so universally loved by fans. There are few wrestlers better at re-inventing themselves, with only Chris Jericho standing out over Undertaker in that regard.
While seeing a few years of The Deadman as a nostalgia character was fine, it wasn’t going to last forever. Having some time with Undertaker in his Big Evil persona will open up some new possibilities for him as he shows up on major shows. It suits itself well to playing the role of an enforcer for a big match, which would be a way to get Undertaker involved with matches while keeping him out of the ring.
